    I’ve worked in building societies my entire career in roles ranging from sales, compliance, risk management and governance to operations

    Why did you join Earl Shilton Building Society?

    I joined because of the opportunity I was given to lead and run a well-respected building society

    What it is about working at the Society which you enjoy the most?

    The wide variety of the role ranging from strategy and oversight to speaking to members

    Hobbies and Interests outside of work?

    I’m a Justice of the Peace (Magistrate) and a rugby union referee

    I’ve been Head of Finance since July 2001

    Career background:

    Formerly I was in the profession as a Chartered Accountant

    Why did you join Earl Shilton Building Society?

    Because of the chance to work for a small, local financial institution

    What it is about working at the Society which you enjoy the most?

    The variety of work and strategic input

    Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work?

    Supporting my local church, reading, music and exploring the great outdoors

    How long have you been in your current role?

    I started at the Society in September 2010 and was promoted to manager in October 2014

    Career background:

    Over 30 years in the financial services sector

    Why did you join Earl Shilton Building Society?

    The opportunity came at the right time after being made redundant from a previous job after 17 years

    What it is about working at the Society which you enjoy the most?

    I started in September 2010 as Management Accountant and later took on extra responsibilities for HR and health and safety. I enjoy the variety of the work as working for a small Society gives me the opportunity to get involved in a number of different projects. It is a really pleasant environment to work in and it’s also nice to be working for an organisation that seems to genuinely care about the wellbeing of all their staff and prides itself on giving customers a personal service

    Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work?

    I have a large garden and spend a lot of my spare time gardening. I do Pilates for relaxation and also support Leicester City Football Club

    Career background:

    I have worked in sales, marketing and underwriting for a number of financial services firms, including two other regional building societies

    Why did you join Earl Shilton Building Society?

    I was delighted to have been offered the opportunity to join a building society committed to its mutual values which is thriving due to the sound and prudent way in which it is being managed

    What it is about working at the Society which you enjoy the most?

    The staff and dealing with intermediaries and customers. This is in addition to contributing to setting strategic objectives as part of the management team

    Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work?

    I’m married and a dad to two boys, but I also somehow get the time to regularly run and play football

    How long have you been in your current role?

    I’ve worked at the Society since 1978

    Career background:

    I have experience across different areas of the Society including savings and mortgages and was formerly Compliance Officer and before that Senior Branches Supervisor

    Why did you join the Earl Shilton Building Society?

    Living in Earl Shilton for most of my life I have a lot of personal pride in being part of the team at such a long established business that is in the heart of the village and supports the local community

    What is it about working at the Society that you enjoy the most?

    I thoroughly enjoy my job providing guidance and assurance to staff, managers and directors regarding regulation and legislation, whilst always taking care to ensure that the interests of the Society’s members are always considered

    Do you have any hobbies or interests out of work?

    My hobbies include baking, going to the theatre, listening to a wide range of music and attending live music events. I also enjoy visiting English country houses and historic buildings

    How long have you been in your current role?

    Since April 2016

    Career background:

    Over 25 years IT experience from working in a variety of IT service delivery roles in both the public & private sectors. Prior to joining the Society, I worked for the Leicestershire County Council IT Service Management Team, with responsibility from managing problems, suppliers, performance and service improvement projects.

    Why did you join the Earl Shilton Building Society?

    I was attracted to Earl Shilton as they are a long standing, professional society that still maintains a customer & community focus.

    What is it about working at the Society that you enjoy the most?

    I enjoy the variety of tasks my role provides and being part of a team that all share a common objective.

    Do you have any hobbies or interests out of work?

    I enjoy motorsports, particularly rallying which I have followed since the early eighties, mountain biking, walking and trying to keep fit. I also have a love for Cornwall, pasties and surfing.

    How long have you been in your current role?

    Since October 2014

    Career background:

    I worked for HM Revenue & Customs for two years prior to joining the Society in 1987 as a cashier/clerk then progressed through the Society to become Investment Administration Controller for several years and then Customer Services Controller overseeing both savings and mortgages within the Society. I was then promoted to Customer Services Manager in October 2014

    Why did you join Earl Shilton Building Society?

    What it is about working at the Society which you enjoy the most?

    Being able to treat the Society’s members as individuals and not just as numbers. The variety of work that the role covers and working within a small mutual building society

    Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of work?

    Socialising and spending time with family and friends. You can find me and my husband on a Sunday morning on the football field watching our two sons play for their local teams

    Main job responsibilities

    To ensure the finances of the Society are accurate, complete and run efficiently.

    What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

    Learning how Earl Shilton Building Society operates, and contributing to its success in the future.

    What was it about ESBS which appealed to you?

    I’m excited to be joining a small building society which promotes thrift and home ownership which align with my values. I was also impressed by the Senior Team which I met during the interview process.

    What is the best advice you have ever been given?

    Aim to do 4 things at work each day:

    1. Complete your business tasks.

    2. Learn something new.

    3. Make an efficiency improvement in one of your processes.

    4. Exceed someone’s expectations.

    If you can do all that it’s been a very good day!

    What motivates you at work?

    Solving problems.

    Do you have any hobbies?

    I have a keen interest in fitness, and particularly enjoy running, swimming, and cycling. I recently completed a 50 kilometre trail run in Salisbury and the London triathlon. I am also a member of a sailing club in Wanlip and am hoping to start sailing more.
