Earl Shilton Building Society brings new directors on board

Leicestershire based building society esbs has welcomed Darren Hickman and Alex Robinson to the board as Non-Executive Directors.

Darren has joined as chair of the Risk and Compliance Committee and is a member of the Assets and Liabilities Committee, while Alex chairs the Nominations Committee and is a member of the Audit Committee and the Remuneration Committee.

Darren brings close to four decades experience in the banking industry having held a number of executive positions including Operational Management, Marketing, IT, and Change Management at what is now known as Santander, but was Leicester Building Society when Darren first joined.

“At esbs there is a great team spirit and positive belief to drive the Society forward, maximising its mutual status and delivering benefit for all of its members and community. After a career working exclusively in financial services, I hope my skills and knowledge will help to ensure the Society continues to be successful in the future.

“Having lived and worked in Leicestershire all my life I am a passionate supporter of esbs’ local community-based approach.”

For the last seven years Darren has also served as a Non-Executive Director for Leicestershire Partnerships NHS Trust which is a provider of mental health and community care in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Alex is equally passionate about the localised nature of the Society.

“I believe that building societies have a very important place in helping individuals own their homes and offering savers security and returns, and esbs is a great example of this. I learned of its excellent reputation over a decade ago when I was chair of Mutual One, which provided esbs with compliance and internal audit support, and I’m excited to support esbs in its continued success. The whole team is inspiring in their friendliness, enthusiasm and professionalism.”

Alongside his familiarity with esbs, Alex brings a wealth of industry experience from Skipton Building Society where he was Group Commercial Director for 10 years.

Alex is currently Vice-Chair of Kent HoldCo, which employs over 1,600 people and is a holding company for a range of businesses, from school supplies and consultancy to a legal firm, low carbon advisors and IT infrastructure support.

“I enjoy working with people and businesses and co-founded SREG, a network providing free mentoring to small businesses, so I use a lot of my spare time mentoring individuals and helping them to develop their businesses.”

Paul Tilley, Chief Executive of esbs, said: “We’re very pleased to welcome Alex and Darren to the team. Both are very experienced in the industry and we’re sure they will contribute immensely to esbs’ future success.

“These additions come as our Vice-Chairman, Paul Beardsmore leaves us after seven years on the esbs board. We’d like to thank him for his service and hope that he thoroughly enjoys his retirement!”
