Whether it’s uniforms, stationery, new shoes, P.E. Kits, or books, back-to-school shopping can add up quickly. But how do people decide what’s essential and how much to spend?
In our latest website poll, the most popular approach, chosen by 56% of respondents, was to only buy what’s necessary as needs arise. This flexible mindset helps spread the cost over time and avoids overbuying.
33% said they don’t track the spending closely, suggesting a more relaxed approach that may prioritise convenience or simply reflect the busy nature of the back-to-school period.
A smaller portion, 11%, said they set a strict budget in advance, giving them clear financial boundaries going into the season.

Interestingly, no one said they wait for sales or promotions to decide. This could mean that many shoppers prefer to make purchases based on need or timing, rather than waiting for discounts.
