Mark Flatters (53), a mental health unit Support Worker who lives in Torquay with his husband Barry Dennis (66) and their black Labrador Sam, approached the Society to open a savings account and begin putting money aside for a nest egg.

Now, the couple are gearing up to sell their second property in France, and ultimately intend to sell their existing home in Torquay and move to another in Plymouth, viewing their savings as an important means of investing in the future.

“Opening a savings account with esbs really appealed to me, given the fact I’m keen to support small building societies and like the idea of mutuality,” Mark explains.

After learning more about the Society, Mark decided to open a Regular Monthly Saver account, which offers a means of building up funds by putting away a certain amount of money each month.

“What really struck me about the account was that it wasn’t anywhere near as restrictive as I thought it might be”, he continues, “especially as it allows you to make two withdrawals each year, and it has a competitive interest rate.

“Overall, I found the process of opening up the account to be really straightforward and stress free, and everything that I needed to know was communicated to me in a way that was very easy to understand.

“Given my experience with esbs, I would absolutely recommend the Society to family and friends who are looking to save up. In fact, my sister currently has an ISA with a mainstream building society which she finds to be very restrictive with a poor interest rate, so I have suggested esbs to her.”

When Mark is not at work, he enjoys travelling, walking Sam, going out for meals, and hanging out at the beach.

Paul Tilley, Chief Executive of esbs, said: “Whether you’re looking to make regular or one-off savings deposits, or want to put aside money for children or grandchildren, we offer a comprehensive range of savings accounts.

“The Regular Monthly Saver is a fantastic way of building up your savings by putting money away each month, and allows members the flexibility to make up to two withdrawals per year.

“On behalf of everyone here at esbs, we would like to thank Mark for choosing to save with us, and wish him and Barry all the very best for the future.”
